Fall Pond Maintenance

October 14, 2006

October is the time of year to prepare your pond for the fall and winter months.

  1. Have your water tested. (Kol Koi offers free water testing)
  2. Remove all tropical and floating plants from the pond. Drop hearty lilies to bottom of the pond, and pinch off all dead foliage from remaining water plants.  Root ball must be just below the water surface.
  3. Clean the bottom of the pond to remove all debris.  All rocks and ledges should also be cleaned at this time.   (Preferred method of cleaning is the Muck Vac)
  4. Perform a 25-50 percent water change, depending on the amount of debris in the pond.
  5. Inspect and clean skimmers, waterfalls, filters, and pumps.
  6. Turn off, or remove, UV lighting.
  7. Refill pond.  Don’t forget to use dechlorinator plus.
  8. Add the proper amount of Microbe-Lift Autumn/Winter Prep bacteria.  Follow manufactures recommended dosage based on the size of your pond.
  9. Add pond salt based on pond size.
  10. Cover pond with netting.  (Kol Koi carries a variety of net sizes to meet you pond needs)

Additional fish tips:

  • Feed your fish a wheat germ based food until your water reaches 50 degrees, then stop feeding.
  • If your pond freezes, place a pot of hot water directly on the ice to melt.  Never break or crack the ice!!!
